WHAT TO EXPECT

Science Challenge

Students will be given instructions and materials to carry out the first Science Experiment with Carbon Di Oxide, a greenhouse gas and one of the 5 worst pollutants for the global environment. They will then proceed to use their scientific skills to enhance the results by manipulating the ingredients and executing the experiments again with the given materials.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Technology Challenge

This challenge will be based on a few steps and will not be carried out on the Olympiad Round 1. Students will have time to work on this from the moment they register for the Olympiad. Teams will be required to present their work on the designated Round 1 Olympiad Day.

Step 1: Students will be challenged to work in teams and research on the local environmental issues we are facing. Google, ChatGPT, Bard or any other tool can be used for research.

Step 2: Based on their research, students will be required to pick any issue and brainstorm together for any innovation that involves technology tools to solve the problem.

Step 3: They will draw their idea on a plain A4. Submissions from all team member is encouraged but 1 submission per group is okay too.

Step 4: Design a Poster together, using Canva or any other digital design tool of their choice. Students will be presenting their poster to the judges on the day of Round 1. Email the drawing or it’s photo and the digital poster designs to thestemlabpakistan@gmail.com. Submission deadline for the tech task would be 2 days before the round 1.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Engineering Challenge

Students will be given an engineering challenge where they will follow the Engineering Design Process to problem-solve and find a solution to the challenge given. (For example, the famous Egg Drop Challenge)

Students will create something using the materials provided to them.

Engineering Challenge:

Engineering Design Process, creativity, problem-solving and critical thinking apart from teamwork

Judgement Criteria Sample:

Successful engineered product according to the challenge announced that day.

Mathematics Challenge:

Students will work together with each other to complete a Scavenger Hunt based on logic, puzzles and Mental Math according to their grade level categories.

Good to Know Beforehand:

Team Work, Basic Math Skills based on the 4 operations, grade-level multiplication tables, leadership, & resilience.

Judgement Criteria Sample:

The team that will complete the Scavenger Hunt in the minimum time will be the winner.

Question: Can we register less than 4 students for a team?

Answer: Yes, you can. But 4 students in a team will have an advantage in terms of team work.

Question: Is there any syllabus? How will the students prepare?

Answer: This Olympiad will not be testing memory, but a thrilling events-based program full of hands-on challenges as mentioned above according to their age-categories.

Question: When will the first round take place?

Answer: In February. Dates options will be given by the school administration. We will be going to one school per day. The earlier you reserve the date, the better.

Question: When will the results be announced?

Answer: Round 2 – The Grand Finale will take place on the 9th March. We will announce the results for Round 1 at least a week before that. Round 2’s results will be announced right there and then and students will be rewarded on the same day.

ABOUT US

Curiosity Lab is a child enrichment program where children
are treated as the scientists of tomorrow. They experiment. They interact. They explore. Their curiosity is sparked, nurtured and fueled.

Children are guided by teachers who share their scientific curiosity and believe in the power of education, as they explore the world they inhabit through exciting experiments and ingenious demonstrations.

Science is taught with all its wonder intact.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Children are born with an innate curiosity about the world they inhabit. Questions like, “why is the sky blue?” and “where do babies come from?” may get on your nerves at times, but to continuously ask those questions is what makes great scientists.

However, something unfortunate happens to a child’s wonderful curiosity as they grow up. We start with children who aspire to be scientists and finish with teenagers who are disillusioned with science.

We believe that the problem lies with formal education, where science is taught through “say so” and scarcely leaves the domain of textbooks. We don’t let children experiment, interact or experience science enough. We get them to focus on getting high test scores, while we neglect and forget their curiosity.

At Curiosity Lab, we don’t bore our students with dry theory. We constantly look for ways to make the science come alive. We believe that this is the only way for them to gain a clear understanding of, and an appreciation for what makes the world around them tick.

THE MODULES

This is the heart and soul of what Curiosity Lab has to offer.

The Modules are a structured program consisting of weekly classes, taught in a small group setting. They give context to learning, by tying important scientific concepts together into an exciting overarching story, told through hands-on science.

(We have 20 established Modules that we run throughout the academic year and are adding new ones all the time. Click here to find out what they are.)

Students sign up for the term, typically 10 to 12 classes, and attend one class a week. Our terms run in line with the school academic term. (One-off class options are also available)

The Modules are designed for ages 4 and up, but are divided into 3 levels which are suitable for specific age ranges. All levels follow our constructivist approach but focus on different aspects of the Scientific Method.

To ignite and nurture innate curiosity and become lifelong learners. For ages 4 and 5.

These lessons turn passive spectators of the world into active questioners by exposing them to phenomena that awaken a sense of wonder.

Through free-form activities and experiments, students are encouraged to question the world they inhabit relentlessly, a quality shared by all great scientists.

To freely explore phenomena and discover the laws of nature. For ages 6 to 8.

These lessons build on innate curiosity and allow students to follow it wherever it leads with continuous and informal experimentation.

By developing inductive reasoning, where observations are examined for patterns that can inform a general theory, students discover the laws of nature.

To analyze information, with logic and tests, and discern “truth”. For ages 9 and above.

These lessons present claims of unknown validity which are tested with experiments devised and carried out by the students.

By developing deductive reasoning, where a general principle is used to make predictions backed up by empirical evidence, scientific thinking will become second nature.
